The restaurant's namesake, Scapa Flow, is a vast, sheltered body of water in the Orkney Islands with deep historical significance. It served as the Royal Navy's chief base during both World Wars and was the site of the dramatic scuttling of the German High Seas Fleetin 1919. Today, Scapa Flow is renowned for its shipwrecks, making it a world-class diving destination. The restaurant pays homage to this legacy, blending Orkney's seafaring past with its vibrant food culture for a truly memorable dining experience.

Like the Scapa Flow Restaurant and the Flattie Tea Room, the name Hamnavoe pays homage to Stromness's rich maritime heritage. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the town was a vital port for ships sailing between Britain and North America, particularly those of the Hudson's Bay Company. The name itself is derived from the Old Norse *Hafnarvágr*, meaning "Haven Bay," the ancient term for the town’s sheltered natural harbour.
There is a small coffee lounge on the first floor, located next to the reception. It is open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM and offers a selection of hot drinks, including latte, espresso, and cappuccino.

This tea house, conveniently located on the ground floor of The Stromness Hotel, welcomes guests daily from 8 AM to 3 PM. Guests can enjoy expertly crafted beverages, prepared by trained baristas using professional coffee-making equipment. For those who prefer to drink outdoors, a seating area is available outside the tea house.
