He challenged the taxes Stromness paid to the Royal Burgh of Kirkwall. The lengthy battle ended with the removal of the taxes paid by smaller towns. This house is the finest 17th Century mansion in Orkney. Once home of William Graham Watt, 7th Laird of Breckness. The Laird unearthed the world famous neolithic village of Skara Brae in 1850. Skaill House is well-known for its prolific contribution to Orkney's history. The house was originally built in 1620 by Bishop George Graham. It has been renovated and added to by successive generations over the centuries. 

After careful restoration work, the house is open to the public, and entry is included in a joint ticket with Skara Brae, which is just down the road. Visitors can explore a family home as it was in the 1950s.
